The art of eating sushi

3/15/2023

Whether you are a sushi connoisseur or a beginner, learning how to eat sushi the right way can enhance your dining experience and show respect for the culture and tradition behind this beloved dish. Here are some tips on how to eat sushi like a pro:

  1. Use soy sauce sparingly: Soy sauce is a common condiment for sushi, but don't overdo it. Dip your sushi lightly into the soy sauce, fish side down, and avoid soaking it completely to prevent the rice from falling apart.
  2. Don't mix wasabi with soy sauce: In Japan, it's considered bad manners to mix wasabi with soy sauce, as the chef has already added the right amount of wasabi to the sushi. If you want more wasabi, place it directly on top of the fish or mix it with a small amount of soy sauce in a separate dish.
  3. Eat in the right order: When eating sushi that contains different types of fish, it's recommended to eat them in a certain order to fully appreciate the flavor and texture of each one. Start with the lighter and milder fish, such as flounder or sea bass, and move on to the stronger and fattier ones, such as tuna or salmon.
  4. Eat pickled ginger between different types of fish: The purpose of the ginger is to cleanse your palate between different types of sushi, as each type has its own unique flavor and texture. The ginger's mild, refreshing taste helps to neutralize the palate and prepare it for the next bite.

By following these tips, you can enhance your sushi-eating experience and show respect for the art and tradition of sushi.
